History
Since its inception in 1988, the Division of Genetics, whose faculty members have appointments in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, has served as a focal point for outstanding research in molecular and developmental genetics. More recently, the Division of Genetics has begun to increase its focus on the genetics of human disease, with the explicit long-term goal of fostering the integration of medicine with genetics in the post-genome era. Under the leadership of Richard Maas, M.D., Ph.D., appointed Chief in July of 2000, three strategic priorities were identified as important for the BWH Division of Genetics to meet its mission of research excellence:
- an expansion in the critical mass of genetics researchers at BWH, both within and outside of the Division.
- physical consolidation of the Division with other Harvard Medical School (HMS), Partners, and BWH research programs in genetics.
- generation of scientific and administrative infrastructure for the Division, to be accomplished through acquisition of multiple NIH Training and Program Project grants and the creation of a research endowment.
To expand critical mass and research expertise, the Division of Genetics undertook a vigorous program of junior faculty recruitment. This effort has resulted in the addition of four new faculty members who have primary appointments in the Division, bringing the total number of faculty to eight (8).
During the past year, the Division has also been engaged in planning for a New Research Building (NRB) at HMS. In the fall of 2003, the BWH Genetics Division is scheduled to move to the fourth floor of the NRB along with the HMS Department of Genetics and Harvard-Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics, which will be located on adjacent floors in the same building. Collectively, these three genetics programs will occupy the first four floors of the NRB, providing unparalleled and previously unavailable opportunities for synergistic research collaborations, resource sharing and prospective planning. At the same time, the Genetics Division will be interacting with new BWH research neighbors in the NRB, including the BWH Program in Vascular Biology and the Division of Molecular Pathology in the BWH Department of Pathology. This new home also will provide recently recruited junior faculty the potential opportunity to expand their research programs.
